A Browser
A web browser is an application that is used to explore the internet. It displays websites and and content. Examples of these include Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Google Chrome.

IP

IP Address
A unique number that the internet uses to identify and locate each computer or server on the world wide web.

RWD

Responsive Web Design
Responsive web design (RWD) is a design approach aimed at crafting sites that provide optimal viewing experiences – easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling – across a wide range of devices with differing screen sizes (from mobile phones to desktop computer monitors).

Wordpress

Wordpress
WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 22% of the top 10 million websites as of August 2013.

Cookie
A cookie is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user’s browser while they browse a site. When the user browses the same website in the future, the data stored in the cookie can be retrieved by the website to notify the website of the user’s previous activity. It’s now European Law for a user to authorise the download of any cookies used on a website.

CMS (Content Management Systems)
Allows users to update the content rather than a third party to manage the site for them. Users simply enter their content and images into a simple web form and the system takes care of the rest.

SEO
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) the process used to improving the visibility of a website to commonly used search engines such as Google. It helps to improve your position on the list of results from any given search.

ISP

ISP (Internet Service Provider)
A company that provides you with access to the internet. The most common ways to connect are by using a phone line (dial-up) or a broadband connection (cable or DSL).

domain

Domain Name
Commonly known as a web address it identifies a specific location on the internet also referred to as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Examples of registrars you can purchase a domain name are 123reg, nominet and UKreg.

html

HTML & CSS
These are website programming languages. Hyper Text Mark-up Language or HTML is used to place content onto a web page. Cascading Style Sheets or CSS is used to give your web content styling.

Jquery

JavaScript & jQuery
Javascript is a complex programming language that, when used properly, can provide an enriching user experience.

jQuery is a cross-platform JavaScript library designed to simplify the addition of javaScript to HTML & CSS elements.

Accessibility
Means that people with disabilities can interact with any website. All websites should conform to these standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium. Measures include making text size adjustable, descriptive ‘Alt’ tags for all images, back-up content when Flash is used and the ability to turn off styling and alter colour contrasts.

Web Hosting Provider
A company that hosts web sites for other companies, either by offering colocation services for companies with their own web servers, or by providing large web servers that can host many web sites. Most web hosting companies do some of both.

Keywords
Keywords provide search engines with information about your website. The keywords are used on the site itself and in the programming and relates to the words people may use to find your business or service.
